Connecticut Teen Sues School Over Illiteracy

Aleysha Ortiz, 19, sued Hartford Public High School in Connecticut for negligent infliction of emotional distress after graduating with honours in June 2024, despite being nearly illiterate.

Born in Puerto Rico, Ortiz faced learning difficulties since age 5.

She used smartphone apps to manage schoolwork and college applications but struggles at the University of Connecticut, pausing classes in February 2025 for mental health treatment.

Ortiz claims the school neglected her education, only testing her a month before graduation, and seeks accountability to prevent similar cases.
