Medieval Cult Site Yields ‘Devil’s Money’ Hoard
Gold and silver coins found at Hezingen reveal pagan rituals.

In Hezingen, Netherlands, metal detectorists found over 100 gold and silver coins, dubbed “devil’s money,” at a 7th-century cult site.
Archaeologists, led by Jan-Willem de Kort, uncovered three areas with coins, jewelry, and 17 postholes aligned with equinoxes, suggesting fertility rites.
The site, linked to a high-status settlement, was abandoned by 700 AD as Christianity spread.
